Since the time they broke up?
It seems to me like Billy thinks the Smashing Pumpkins are very under rated, so since the time they broke up, hes gone out & done things like talked with VH1 a lot lot about music & said things like, "If Nirvana were the Beatles, we were the Doors" in Guitar World, & done things like helped Taproot... I guess to get Taproot/nu metal fans possibly to look into SP
It just always seems to me like Billy is very unhappy with the SP's place in musical history, & he's always trying to promote how great they were..
But do you think this helps their popularity? or hurts it? cus I think it hurts it - I owned Siamese Dream for 2 years & never gave it a good chance because I always thought Billy was too egotisical & did & said too many stupid things (how much he was talking on VH1 all the time annoyed the fuck outta me to be honest)... I mean people dont want to feel forced to feel by musicians of a band that they're great, you know?
This is the only reason I never bought another SP album.. even tho after finally giving Siamese Dream a good chance I've decided to -
But when I talk to other people that haven't gotten into the SP, they don't want to cus the same kind of response comes up, "Billys too egotisical", and even though they're missing out - I completely understand that
If Billy Corgan just went up into the mountains & lived in isolation or with a girlfriend or something after SP broke up... and he never did any of these things, SP would definitely be more popular today I think.

I don't think he helped taproot out to get people to like SP. Like all musicians, Billy has a huge ego. That's too bad if it turns you off a band, especially in the case of tsp, because there's lots of good stuff out there by them to obsess over. I think you have to look beyond the personal traits of a person and just see what the music's like - make a dicision based on that and not the person's attitude. That comes later.

i think the jesus-sexing lyical content in zwan killed the fanbase by half a mile. most people don't want a preacher for a role model.

What? You don't agree? You must be a musician Surely you can't deny the fact that most musicians are tripping on their ego like there's no tomorrow, and Billy was by no means an exceptions to this seemingly universal truth.

Bass players don't have egos. If we did we'd play the guitar.

I dont think Billys too egotistical, in a way i think it helped SP's career and in another it harmed it. Id it wasnt for Billy SP would of never got past Gish, with all the problems at the time Siamese Dream is virtually all of Billy's doing, so in record there's no real reason why Billy's solo album wont even be half as good. Also Billy's ego create some great songs, listen to 'Zero' to find that out.
The only real thing that harmed SP was when Billy formed Zwan he started to rub out any idea SP formed, he got rid of the official site and the O-Board without warning to the members and cast aside any notion SP existed which enraged quite a few people. Then ironically SP was one of the reasons he split up Zwan amidst of internal trouble.
My advice to anyone is not to listen to Billy as a person, learn to love him as an artist.

He's made it hard to love him as either with his shitty blog online to show his person, and his shitty jesus humping lyrics in his art.
