I personally dont have a problem with it to a certain extent. I know it is wrong, but it's available and it can be a good way for artists to be recognised. A lot of the music, videos etc. that I download are rarities that cannot be purchased so I dont have a problem with that. I personally believe that downloading singles is okay, but albums can be going too far. I download albums only to see what they are like, and 90% of the time I am impressed and will go and buy the album.
Anyways thats just my thoughts, tell me what your opinions are...

I can't afford to drop 20 bucks on a lousy album, so I download a couple of tracks to see if I'm interested before making a purchase.

id say to an extent, because if you want bands to keep touring and making music, you should by their albums. i listen to maybe 3 or 4 songs before buying an album, unless they are from SP or pink floyd, i must have a complete collection from them. and the pricks from metallica need to lay off, how can they give sympathy to a bunch of convicts who raped or killed somebody but rides a kid's ass for downloading one of their shit songs. and i think albums are still overpriced, how much fucking money does EMI records or virgin need? and the band doesnt even get a quarter of the CD income. and of course there's nothing wrong with downloading live shows because they are non-commercial

If I had the extra hard drive space, I'd download the entire Metallica catalogue twice just to piss them off.

Depends on the copyright laws of your particular country. I know there are some European countries where it isn't illegal.

Basically I just download it if I really like it and I know it can't be bought in a cd store.... But sometimes my hands itch really bad. Last time it did was when I downloaded the Magical Mystery Tour videos.

I'm all for downloading, but I'm not a musician. If I like the band enough to support them I'll buy their CD (which I usually do) or I just 'borrow' it from a friend, then burn it. Lately I've been a little obsessed with owning the official albums of my favorite artists, so downloading has been scarce, but the few mix CDs I've made are all material that I own(ed). So it's okay in my eyes. No guilt or remorse here, if you have the bandwidth I say go for it.

Yeah, same here - I buy CD's of the bands that I like.. but if I want like one song off the whole album I'm obviously not going to buy the album because of that one song. That's what downloading should be for. I agree with downloading music off the internet to a certain extent. If you download millions of songs a day, well then.. I think you need to support some bands. It's kind of ripping them off. But a lot of people buy their albums as it is.

The record companies gouged people for years by charging $18 on a Cd that cost them, at the MOST, a dollar to make. That is an obscene amount of profit. They're just getting what they deserve.

CDs are finally starting to fall in price a bit around here. Which is nice. I just wish more bands were like The Mars Volta, since Frances the Mute is 7.99 at Futureshop right now.
The best way to support an artist remains buying their merchandise and going to see their concerts. Sadly no good concerts come through my area, and there also aren't many places to buy good band merchandise.
